Type: Archives and Collections Management 
The Waterfront Museum opened in 1986 as an exhibition and performance space that has witnessed New York's and New Jersey's urban evolution from a unique perspective. Throughout this time, David Sharps –the museum's founder and president– has built a significant collection of files, artifacts, photographs, and images that reveal the city's maritime narratives' significance. 

Since September 2020, the museum has placed significant efforts in cataloging, organizing, and preserving its unique collection. This ongoing project aims to find the appropriate strategy to share its unique archive with broader communities as a way to contribute to educational and academic endeavors that focus on maritime and urban history. Additionally, it seeks to place the Waterfront Museum not only as a cultural destination but also as a crucial structure that ties past, present, and future of Red Hook's development and its surrounding communities.

Peñitas Reserve is located within a 30-minute drive south of Valle de Bravo’s Historic Center. The site comprises a prominent landscape that gets a unique character from the mountains surrounding natural valleys and water bodies.&#38;nbsp;


The project’s commission consisted of designing a house to be one of the structures of a larger master plan that encompasses a natural regenerative landscape. Under that premise, the main intention was to integrate the house architecture as part of the site’s ecosystem. The overall project, including its interior layout, was developed in close collaboration with the clients and their interest in creating a discreet building that would be integrated into the site’s nature. 


To tie the architectural proposal with the natural site, the conceptualization for the project started by recognizing the traditional residential architecture in Valle de Bravo, which responds to the region’s rainy weather and landscapes. Typically, houses in this region incorporate gabled roofs and semi-exterior porches that allow interaction with the outside while providing shelter and comfort. Most roofs are finished with red clay tiles, creating a holistic image of the town. 


The design resulted in a one-story gabled-roof linear structure with a three-meter porch on each side, opening the views to the east and west. The project also contributes to the site’s rainwater harvesting systems through the use of rain gutters the strategic location of collection points.


The selection of building materials was based on their local availability, construction simplicity, and economic feasibility. The walls were built in adobe blocks and red brick and were finished with a coating made of adobe. The structure was made of a continuous wooden truss system supported by wood columns and stone walls in a staple-like configuration at each end. The roof was finished in clay tiles and incorporates skylights at select locations that increase the presence of natural light. All materials were sourced locally, either from the site itself, such as soil, stone, and aggregates, or the nearby material stores for items such as brick, cement, or wood.


As years have passed, the house has continued to merge with its landscape while adapting to the evolving needs of its inhabitants and visitors.

	Mariana Ávila Flynn

Mexican architect graduated in 2012 from Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City. Currently, she is based in New York as a 2020 graduate from the Masters of Science in Historic Preservation from the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation at Columbia University. 

Along with her professional career, Mariana’s practice has focused on rethinking the evolution of the built environment. Through an integrated education, she has aimed to develop a deep understanding of the emplacement, history, culture, and traditions of a site as a way to conceive proposals that can become part of a society and to engage its inhabitants. Her experience includes collaborating in architectural studios in Mexico City and New York, being involved in a wide variety of projects that have delved into research, architectural and exhibition design, and construction supervision.

Her interests are currently expanding the use of heritage as a crucial component of contemporary contexts by including historical research as part of a professional methodology. Through her work, she expects to intersect preservation analysis and theory with design practices on multiple scales to demonstrate that heritage can be approached from diverse perspectives as a tool that tackles multiple issues.

The population analysis is based on the boundaries resulted from the census block groups in two different years: 2000 and 2010. Census block groups represent the block group areas in Indiana for the decennial census. These areas are not legal boundaries, but are considered stable geographic units used for the presentation of decennial census data. 


The data used in the development of this study was extracted from the two sources listed below. However, zoning information was extracted from&#38;nbsp; the Planning Department of the City of Columbus, Indiana.


1. IndianaMap


IndianaMap website provides statistical information for the state of Indiana. It is the largest publicly available collection of Indiana geographic information map data and was created by the Indiana Geological and Water survey, which maintains and develops the site. The data is accessible from the website as interactive maps for the general public, Web Map Services for GIS professionals, and downloadable data. 


2. American Fact Finder 


“American FactFinder” (AFF) provides access to data about the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas. The data in AFF come from several censuses and surveys including the decennial census, the American Community Survey, the American Housing Survey, and the Economic Census. 


For the purpose of this study, the data collected came from the decennial census of 2010 in Bartholomew County, Indiana. This data was joined to the census blocks geographical information extracted from Indiana Map to create the maps corresponding to 2010.

641-43 Tenth Avenue exemplifies the first major wave of tenement constructions in the late 1870s. It is significant as a rare example of a tenement from this period with most of its characteristic architectural elements preserved. Also, it can be considered one of the latest cases of Italianate style proliferation. Nowadays 641-43 Tenth Avenue continues performing its primary use as a tenement with storefront spaces in its original layout. Given the program of the building succeed over the years, this proposal relies upon the rehabilitation of the storefronts and the façade restoration as a way of recalling its historical features.

Woodlawn Cemetery is located in the south-east area of The Bronx borough. It was recognized as a significant burial place in New York City from its foundation during the last decades of the nineteenth century. Over the years, its curated landscape became home to a variety of mausoleums and memorials portraying a particular period in the social history and architectural development of New York. 
John J. Bradley’s Mausoleum sits on 11024 Plot at Chestnut Hill Section inside the cemetery. Its emplacement is in the central lot of a six circular lot-group. Its construction responded to the request of May Kelly in 1903 for her husband’s burial with a design undertaken by the prestigious firm C.E Tayntor Company. However, in 1934 the property was transferred to John Bradley, which resulted in a renovation of the monument for accommodating the new requirements for Bradley’s family. The permanence of the memorial inside the cemetery echoes the natural pass of time, noticeable in its material deterioration. However, this situation had allowed the mausoleum to mimic itself with the Woodlawn natural scenery over the years. 
The intention of this exercise undertook the idea of speculating into the complex history behind one mausoleum inside Woodlawn Cemetery through archival research. Besides, the idea was to understand its construction and building materials based on digital and archival measured drawings and site photographs.
